The productivity of a medical center: key points to take into account

How to measure productivity in a medical center?
New approaches to measuring the productivity of a physician's office |
When thinking about the productivity of a medical center, there are several variables that are central: the number of patients seen, the quality of care, the rate of recurrence, etc. However, it is key to be able to choose the metrics that best define the success of a health center's management.
Traditionally, productivity is measured primarily in terms of finances or time spent on the task. In the case of healthcare, it may include the number of patients seen, the time of care received at various stages of a patient's life, or solely the time a physician spends with a patient.
However, in recent times, the patient's health outcome in terms of costs is being taken as a variable to be considered to measure the productivity of medical care. In that sense, this allows us to look in detail at how often a patient returns to the office and whether or not their needs were met, the stability and not just focus on what was spent or the time spent in the office.
This change in approach does not mean that time is no longer an issue, but rather that it is viewed from a different perspective: time should be measured in terms of those tasks that are not considered productive in order to minimize time, preferably through the automation of processes. For example, the use of electronic medical records (EMR), as well as the processes of referring and assigning tests and studies.
This change in perspective allows for a more comprehensive analysis of medical care in order to identify possible obstacles to productivity and to generate strategies adapted to the dynamics of each health care facility
